GNSS is reliable but clear unobstructed view of the GPS or Glonass constellations is not always available. In these circumstances inertial navigation systems can assist during GNSS outages. An inertial navigation system (INS) allows an incredibly high rate of dynamic output (position coordinates, attitude, speed and acceleration) to be transmitted continuously without the aid of external references. Pairing GNSS with an INS system would serve to “plug the holes” during GNSS outages. During a GNSS outage, the INS will keep track of where you’re moving based on your last know position. This allows a vehicle of any kind to hold a more reliable and accurate position overtime.
