Navigation System Integration
GNSS is reliable, but oftentimes a clear unobstructed view of the GPS or GLONASS constellations is not always available. In these circumstances inertial navigation systems can assist during GNSS outages. An inertial navigation system (INS) allows an incredibly high rate of dynamic output (position coordinates, attitude, speed and acceleration) to be transmitted continuously without the aid of external references. Pairing GNSS with an INS system would serve to “plug the holes” during GNSS outages. During a GNSS outage, the INS will keep track of where you’re moving based on your last know position. This allows a vehicle of any kind to hold a more reliable and accurate position overtime. The StarFire network enhances ordinary GNSS position accuracy, delivering only the most precise positioning for your needs and works well when integrated with a GNSS/inertial system.
There are a variety of benefits associated with INS/GNSS integrations. Not only do INS/GNSS integrations bridge the gap between GNSS outages, but also allow for greater position accuracy over time. INS’ continuous dead reckoning and dynamic output make it the ideal short-term solution for GNSS outages.
How does StarFire affect performance?
- Greater position accuracy based on the real-time accuracy of the StarFire network (typically 5cm)
- With an up time of 99.999%, StarFire’s redundant systems ensures reliability
The enhanced augmentation capability of StarFire when coupled with high precision integrated GNSS/Inertial navigation systems, provides the ideal precise positioning solution deployable in situations when GNSS by itself is unable to provide the answer.
What applications could this technology serve?
Growing INS technologies are opening a wide variety of market applications and NavCom’s StarFire Network would be the ideal INS/GNSS solution for the following applications:
- Navigation for manned and unmanned vehicles
- Vehicle motion sensor (VMS) integration
- Geo-location of sensor targeting
- Ability to transfer align remote sensors
- Flight control and avionics
